Dubai neighbourhood guide
Staying in Old Dubai
The historic heart of Dubai around the Creek — traditional souks, heritage districts and abra boat crossings, with a more local feel and often better hotel value.
- Best for
- Culture, souks, value for money
- Watch out for
- Far from the main beaches

Old Dubai is the name usually given to the areas on either side of Dubai Creek: Deira to the north and Bur Dubai to the south. This is where the city began, and it still feels more traditional than the newer districts.
What it's like
Narrow streets, busy markets and older buildings set the tone. In Deira you will find the Gold Souk and Spice Souk, while Bur Dubai is home to the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Traditional wooden abra boats carry passengers across the Creek between the two sides.
Who it suits
- Travellers interested in culture, heritage and markets
- Budget-conscious visitors, as hotels here are often more affordable
- Repeat visitors who want a different side of Dubai
Drawbacks
Old Dubai is a long way from the main beaches, and the streets can be crowded and less polished than in the newer areas. Hotel quality varies, so read the details carefully before booking.
Consider instead
For landmarks and shopping with a central location, look at Downtown Dubai. For a beach holiday, JBR is a better fit.
