Cities we cover

The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Most visitors stay in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, but the right base depends far more on the kind of trip you want than on the emirate's name.

Choosing where to stay in the UAE

Start with how you want to spend your days. A beach-focused break, a city trip built around dining and sightseeing, a family holiday with a pool at its centre and a quieter escape to the mountains or the east coast all point to different parts of the country.

  • For a first visit with plenty to do: Dubai offers the widest choice of neighbourhoods and hotel styles, from busy waterfront districts to calmer residential areas.
  • For culture and a slower pace: Abu Dhabi, the capital, suits travellers who want museums, mosques and a less hectic city feel.
  • For beaches and nature: Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah are better suited to resort stays, mountain scenery and the Gulf of Oman coastline.
  • For heritage on a budget: Sharjah is known for its museums and heritage areas, and often appeals to travellers who want a more traditional atmosphere.

When to go

The cooler months, roughly from late autumn to early spring, are the most comfortable for outdoor sightseeing and beach days. Summer is very hot, so it suits travellers who plan to spend most of their time at the pool, in air-conditioned malls or at indoor attractions. Hotel demand and atmosphere change with the seasons, so check current conditions with the hotel or booking partner before you travel.

Before you book

  • Decide whether you want to be close to the beach, the main sights or a quieter residential area. It shapes the whole trip.
  • Check whether a hotel suits your group. Families often value space and pools, while couples may prefer somewhere they can walk to restaurants in the evening.
  • Think about getting around. Some areas are easy to explore on foot or by metro; others mean relying on taxis.
